Cocoa: The drink of Gods!

Cocoa is ancient and has been around for centuries. Archaeologists found cocoa beans in the burial chambers of the Olmecs dating from 1500- 400 BC. The Olmecs might have been the first users of cocoa but the Mayans also fell in love with the drink. They called this concoction chocolatl and drank cocoa powder mixed with spices and herbs. Mainly used by the upper class, the beans were prized and sometimes used as money. Even the ancients knew that cocoa had tremendous value and health benefits.

Ancient Rulers Tasted Magic

The Mayans and Toltecs drank a very different version of hot cocoa than we think of. They added cocoa powder to wine, spices and peppers as well as hot water. Often this bitter and spicy drink was reserved for kings and court. The ritual of creating the cocoa powder and special mixtures was secret, like a trademark recipe. Once the Spanish got a hold of it Cocoa took on a life of its own. Soon people of all classes was clamoring for the now sweetened hot chocolate. Cocoa beans became the newest craze for bakers and dessert makers all over Europe.

DRINK HOT COCOA POWDER TO HELP WITH COLDS & FLU

Cordyceps is used for asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic fatigue, renal failure, enhancing libido, diabetes, emphysema, heart disease, hepatitis B and other symptoms. Chinese athletes use cordyceps to increase their stamina and endurance. Cordyceps has been shown to enhance athletic performance because it promotes blood flow and oxygen supplies throughout the body. While the dosage in our Cocoa Mojo is not considered theraputic it can have the effect of lifting the performance of your immune system.

Ganoderma helps cleanse the body from toxins and boosts the immune system. It also helps with liver detoxification, thus improving liver function by stimulating the regeneration of liver cells. Ganoderma has been shown to regulate the immune and endocrine system, prevent tumors, thus improving the circulation and eliminating free radicals.

HEART HEALTHY HOT COCOA

Cocoa can reduce cholesterol. A Penn State-led study has found that a diet high in flavonoid-rich cocoa powder and dark chocolate had favorable effects on LDL. Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton, of Penn State noted in a recent study that:

"The incorporation of dark chocolate and cocoa powder into the diet is one means of increasing antioxidant intake. Furthermore, the inclusion of dark chocolate and cocoa powder in a diet that is rich in other food sources of antioxidants results in a high antioxidant intake which would reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. "

COCOA POWDER IS ALSO BRAIN FOOD

Eating chocolate could help to sharpen up your mind and give you a short-term boost in cognitive skills. A study led by Professor Ian Macdonald, professor of metabolic physiology at The University of Nottingham, found that consumption of a cocoa drink rich in flavanols -a key ingredient of dark chocolate- increases blood flow to key areas of the brain for 2 to 3 hours. The results of his MRI studies suggest that the flavanols found in cocoa might be useful in boosting brain function for people with fatigue, sleep deprivation and even the effects of growing older.

WE DON'T DUTCH OUR COCOA

Commercial chocolates are "dutched" which involves soaking cocoa mass in potassium or sodium carbonate. Do you want to be drinking cocoa that has been soaked in chemicals? Most commercial hot chocolates also remove the flavanols like epicatechin from your cocoa because they tend to have a bitter taste. Then they add processed sugar, preservatives and fillers that reduce the cocoa content to less than 15%. Essentially you are just drinking hot sugar with artificial chocolate flavors. No wonder chocolate has gotten such a bad rap! Powerful nutrition in a delightful beverage. People are now discovering the nutritional benefits of the cocoa bean. Recent research has found that flavonoids in cocoa are more powerful than vitamins such as ascorbic acid in protecting circulating lipids from oxidation.

Make Sure you are Drinking the Right Cocoa! Don't settle for fake hot chocolate when you can have genuine delicious hot cocoa. The best way to make sure you are getting the real deal is to start with quality cocoa powder. The best cocoa powder is organic cocoa that is dark brown and will taste bitter.

Try something different... make your own hot beverage by mixing this powder with hot water or just like when you were a kid: real milk.

Milk substitutes like: soy milk, coconut milk or rice milk are great for those who are lactose intolerant or who just want to try something different. You can sweeten your drink by adding sugar, honey or agave nectar.

"Nowhere else has nature compressed such a store of the most valuable nutrients into such a small place as it has with the cocoa bean." the researcher Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) once said. A study done by Cornell researchers, headed by Chang Y. (Cy) Lee, states that cocoa won out over other drinks is because of its high content of phenolic phytochemicals, or flavonoids. Flavanoids are well known to contain a high level of antioxidants that is believed to prevent cancer, reduce the risk of heart disease and other health issues. Dr Lee said "Phenolic compounds protect plants against insects and pathogens, and they remain active even after food processing." Reduce pain and anxiety naturally!

Cocoa contains several bioactive compounds that promote alertness, lessen pain and promote a natural feeling of well-being.

  • For example, one such element, Tryptophan, reduces anxiety by producing serotonin. The compounds in cocoa also produce endorphins which lessen sensitivity to pain. Aztec hot chocolate was beleived to have magic powers because they noticed that drinking cocoa makes you feel good.

Scientists prove what the ancients already knew Cocoa is a heavenly drink. Not just for its taste but also for it's nutritive bebefits. Food scientists from Cornell University state that they have discovered that cocoa ingredients have almost twice the antioxidants of red wine and nearly three times the antioxidants of green tea.

Try hot cocoa without dairy

Even though cocoa beans have 500 times more antioxidants than blueberries; studies indicate that adding a diary product actually blocks the body's ability to properly absorb them. In order to get the most antioxidants, mix ground cocoa with non-dairy liquids for hot chocolate, smoothies or shakes. You can enjoy drinking cocoa if it is hot or cold but heating the cocoa triggers the release of more antioxidants.

The Important Difference Between Hot Cocoa and Hot Chocolate

The distinction is in the nutritional properties. Hot cocoa is made from raw cocoa powder, which is pressed chocolate which removes the fat of the cocoa butter. Hot chocolate is made from chocolate bars melted or ground into powder. Hot chocolate usually has a very high sugar and fat content and low cocoa content. The nutrition in Healthy hot Cocoa can be very good for you, especially if you minimize the sugar and fat. It seems as though we are not the first to understand that Hot cocoa has proven health benefits.

Now you really can give into your chocolate cravings and drink a cup of cocoa everyday - just for your health!
